The Goat Rodeo Sessions
The Goat Rodeo Sessions is an ambitious and groundbreaking project that brings together four string virtuosos: world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile. These artists -- each prominent figures in the music space independently -- have come together as a unique ensemble for this project. The music, including two tracks with female vocalist Aoife O'Donovan, crosses several different genres.
Yo-Yo Ma
Yo-Yo Ma is a cello virtuoso, whose repetoire spans genres. In addition to recordings of the standard classical repertoire, he has recorded a wide variety of folk music such as American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies, the tangos of Argentinian composer Ástor Piazzolla, and Brazilian music. Ma's primary performance instrument is a Montagnana cello built in 1733.
Stuart Duncan
Stuart Duncan is a Grammy Award-winning fiddle player. He was voted multiple times the Academy of Country Music Fiddle Player of the Year, and his repertoire expands to include the mandolin, guitar, and banjo.
Edgar Meyer
Edgar Meyer is a bassist, composer, and instrumentalist. His styles include classical, bluegrass, newgrass, and jazz. A recipient of both the Avery Fisher Prize and the MacArthur Fellowship, Edgar's contributions range from his collaborative works to his innovative compositions.
Chris Thile
Chris Thile is a virtuoso mandolinist and recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. He is best known for his work as part of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, but his collaborations and compositions span the genre. He was recently tapped to succeed Garrison Keillor as host of A Prairie Home Companion.
The Album
The Goat Rodeo Sessions combines the talents of four different solo artists, cello virtuoso Yo-Yo Ma, mandolin master Chris Thile, bluegrass fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer, each a Grammy Award winning star in their own right, to create a unique, genre-breaking sound that’s part composed, part improvised and uniquely American.
